Episode 75 Adam Port (Souvenir, Keinemusic, Berlin)
October 07, 2009 03:21 AM PDT
Join us as NOICE! launches anew monthly series of 1 offs sponsored by one of our Residents P toile. the series is called A Perfect Circle and will feature 1 DJ per month on the NOICE! podcast. Today we are proud to present Adam Port Techno’s biggest flaw is its self-referencial tendency. You know the deal, the common contemporary DJ/Producer steals an Underground Resistance-Record from his older brother at the age of 16 (biographical details may vary, not to impair the facts, though), thus presuming to have found the holy grail (what, of course, nobody is claiming to deny). His world is shrinking down to Detroit, Chicago, New York and Berlin within the following years, he’ll equip himself with records and turntables and not look over the rim of his MKII ever again. Adam Ports biography is different. Adam was Hardcore, when he was 16. No, not Rotterdam-Hardcore. We’re talking New York-, Boston- and Washington D.C.-Hardcore here. It’s a past that he still lives up to, cultivating it in his vegetarian-straight-edge-lifestyle. After that there was HipHop. He got in touch with turntablism, discovered his love for vinyl and evolved to be a skilled DJ for the first time. Then, finally came Techno. This way of tracing down spaces, giving one the best possible chance of self-development, is the essential reason for Ports presence being so unique. There’s no scene-dictated tunnel view in his activities, there is only a pointed emphasis on style, on groove and sophistication. An emphasis, that, because it’s informed by Dub, Danchall, Rap, Soul or even Psychedelic Rock, is advanced enough to always shine through the inflationary characteristic of the genre as notably original. That applies to both, his productions and his DJ-sets. What Adam Port is laying his hands on might have its place within the parameters of House and Techno, but it’s always more than that. It’s his style. UPCOMMIG RELEASES:

we are excited about or podcasts on NOICE! this month. please welcome Defrag records and booking agency to the October season... and what better way to start it then with SUperstar Robert Babicz. "A Cheerful Temper", the name of Robert Babicz’s debut album for Systematic Recordings is arguably the best way to describe the Cologne based Pole. Answering the question why he is choosing this specific name, Babicz explains that he feels caught between two worlds: “The real world of everyday life and a surreal dream world comparable to the backdrop of a fairy tale.” Robert’s musical career starts out quite exceptionally and indeed rather fabulously in the early 90s. Right after the phenomenon of Chicago and deep house, techno began to establish itself as a brand new and totally original part of youth culture. In 1989, the year the wall came down, Berlin sees the first big techno happenings like Love Parade and Teknozid. But Cologne also sees many new clubs like the Space club or the Sweatbox. Pioneers of these days were Reinhard and Wolfgang Voigt (now running the Kompakt empire), The Modernist, Mate Galic, Roland Casper and Rob Acid (aka Robert Babicz). Robert’s first release “Happy answer” becomes an unexpectedly big hit. Especially in the UK, on the label London Records the track storms the charts at the same time as M.A.R.R.S. “Pump up the volume” and “Theme from s-express”. More and more acid house influenced records come out and soon they dominateclub culture. Of the time Robert wistfully remembers: “It was an incredibly exciting but also very excessive time of my life with loads of wonderful moments and parties.”At the end of the 90s Robert withdraws somewhat in order to reflect and to reinvent himself. He begins to produce records as Atlon Inc and Dicabor, with an identity completely opposite to that of Rob Acid productions. The quality and the sound standard of these ambient projects become more and more important in his work and at the same time they improve it as he masters new equipment and techniques. In 2001 he meets Marc Romboy and Klaus Derichs and together they create a new platform called Shortcut Recordings dedicated to Robert’s club tracks. After a period of calm and relaxed tracks it is now time to pump up the volume and raise the BPMs again. His productions become very technoish at this stage, moving away from his acid house influences. After Robert collaborates with Marc Romboy on the label Le Petit Prince, Romboy creates Systematic Recordings in the summer of 2004. He asks Robert to remix his first single with the Detroit legend Blake Baxter and to do a new version for Berlin’s house impresario Phonique. On top of that Robert starts to release singles on high profiled imprints like Kompakt, Treibstoff and Steve Bug’s Audiomatique. Those who are following Robert’s career over the years, know that his sound and the standard of his productions reach almost audiophile standards. No surprise then that many well known artists like Martinez, Minilogue or Gabriel Ananda request his special abilities for mastering their productions. One reason for his famous sound stems in part from his collection of old analogue equipment (even from the 60s and 70s) which Robert uses alongside his computer. Besides drum machines like the famous Roland TR808 and TR909, Robert owns a variety of unique machines like special effects and EQs the size of living rooms, some taken from German TV stations to edit their movies and crime shows. He even uses equalizers used by the secret service and compressors used by East German radio stations. It is no wonder then that the sound quality of the album is both graceful and crystal clear. Tracks like “Sin” and “Loosing Memories” surprise with their club compatible deepness while at the same time moving between the genres of Electronica, Techno and classic House. ‘A Cheerful Temper’ is indeed a very special and genre-breaking album full of beautiful electronic club music. In the last few years there has been a proliferation in the amount of people producing really good techno, acid, minimal and everything in between. The majority of these producers are new, but Robert Babicz (aka Rob Acid) is an example of an older producer that has managed to stay relevant by reinventing his sound (to some extent). Many of his new tracks have that trademark acid sound, but what we are listening to is most definitely acid for the 21st century. This man is not stuck in the 1990s, him and his machinedrum are moving with the times. The last year or two have seen a series of quality releases for Babicz on labels like Punkt, Treibstoff and K2, making him a producer to keep an eye on. Episode 66 Negru (Cecille Numbers, RO)August 30, 2009 04:58 AM PDT
We finish off our wonderful series with the Vassallo booking agency with one of Romania's brightest stars and Studio Martin residents. one of our goals is to expose worldwide talent to the dance community. we Expect great things from Negru.... Enjoy: Negru, born in Bucharest, in a well known family of musicians, began taking piano lessons and carried it on for over 12 years. He started performing with his dj acts only a couple of years ago in after hours clubs in the same city he was born meanwhile he started his own residency at Studio Martin, one of the most underground club in the field. Nowadays he’s spreading his music sets all around the country with much appreciation from the people who love his music.
and now 5 questions with Negru:
Negru: yes, it's true. The music scene in Romania is "growing" as we speak and for several years the underground scene of Bucharest hosts almost every weekend top world wide djs. So, you can imagine that romanian producers and djs have a good taste in music. Mostly i enjoy playing with Livio&Roby. 2. I see you have several releases on Cecille . Tell us about these releases? Negru: What can i say... i'm really glad that my music is appreciated by a big label such as Cecille. My first release was with Livio&Roby at Cecille Numbers and a few days ago the same label released V.A. Somero 2009, so i'm happy to appear next to important names such as Sneak, Reboot, Robert Dietz. 3. can you describe your approach to production, and what you would suggest to up and coming producers in terms of how to approach making music? Negru: After you start performing as a dj, the next step is to produce the music on your own taste. I suggest everyone to start producing when they get fed up on what they hear. 4. talk about the Producers that influenced you and gave you the inspiration to both play and make music? Negru: I was influenced mostly by hip hop music and by my uncle's music, Johnny Raducanu a well known jazz musician. 5. What are your Top 5 tracks at the moment? Negru:
6. What's next for Negru? Negru: Haha, don't know where to start.... Playlist podcast :

we continue our wonderful series of Vassallo's artists with someone we really see a bright future for. please give a NOICE! welcome to Dimi Angélis (Smallville, NL). Dimi ANgeli’s
The last years have seen a new wave of minimal techno and Dimi has kept developing his sound. Inspired by old as well as new artists who make Detroit House and Old Skool minimal Techno. Major influences now come from people like Daniel Bell, Todd Sines, Joel Mull, Basic Channel, Mike Huckaby and a lot of other new unknown techno and house producers. With his DJ gigs and “new style” techno productions, Dimi has found a way to move forward, keeping up to date with changes in today’s techno and house scene, without forgetting about the past. Towards the end of 2003 Dimi joined a talented Dutch artist Jeroen Search. Together they produced ep,s like the Ion 01 and 02 EPs, which appeared on Steve Rachmad’s sub-label of Scorp: “Ion”.In 2005, again with Jeroen Search, he released two EPs on the Dutch label Audiosculpture: “Oxygenating EP” and “The Next Level”. Towards the end of 2005 “Counterpart” is born. The alias under which Dimi and Jeroen continue to produce multiple EP’s. Crowning the success of their previous releases, Dimi Angélis and Jeroen Search join hands again to produce “The Martian Mystique” EP on Jeff Mills’s label Mission (6277/Axis) under the “Counterpart” alias. Currently Dimi Angélis & Jeroen Search have put together a dynamic/energetic live act with a Roland 909 and plenty of hardware. They will be on tour through out the world under the Counterpart alias. The kickoff of Counterpart took place at the Rex Club (Paris) in January 2007, and their debut on Dutch soil was scheduled at Holland’s leading techno event "Awakenings" in the Westergasfabriek in September 2007. As a wish to unite the contemporary techno diehards, and preserve the underground origins of the techno scene, in September 1999 Dimi has started organizing non-profit underground parties, which usually take place in nature or abandoned lofts. With his concept he attracted many respected artists: Steve Rachmad, Estroe, Petar Dundov, Joel Mull, Shinedoe, Jeroen Search, Seutek, Joachim, Quazar, Steffi, Diskordia, Pelacha, 2000 and One, etc. This is only one of the ways in which Dimi has shown his great affection, talent and artistic potential towards techno. Nowadays the underground techno scene sees new organizers like “Dekmantel/Nachtmantel”, which program Dimi as one of their resident DJ’s and live performances by Counterpart. So far Dimi Angélis performed at numerous clubs and events, of which the most important ones are the respected Awakenings (Amsterdam), Innercity (Amsterdam), Kozzmozz (Gent, Belgium), REX Club (Paris), Club One (Madrid), Berghain (Berlin), Doornroosje (Nijmegen, Holland), Rio,s (Leeds, UK), Poema (Utrecht, Holland), Mazzo (Amsterdam), 013 (Tilburg, Holland), Tuzla (Bosnia), Effenaar (Eindhoven, Holland), Simplon (Groningen, Holland), Asta (Den Haag, Holland), Melkweg (Amsterdam), Paradiso (Amsterdam), Studio 80 (Amsterdam), Stubnitz Boat (Amsterdam / Rotterdam), Welcome To The Future Festival (Amsterdam), Rockit Outdoor, (Utrecht, Holland), Free Your Mind Festival (Arnhem, Holland), Decadence (Gent, Belgium), De Vloer (Utrecht, Holland), Bootleg (Rotterdam, Holland), De Rechter (Eindhoven,Holland), Speakerplay (Hotel Arena/Heineken Music Hall, Amsterdam), etc etc. Episode 64 Boris Werner (Remote Area, Moon Harbour, Amsterdam, NL)August 21, 2009 07:15 AM PDT
well since we are featuring Moon Harbour all month long on our radio show, we felt it appropriate to continue the tradition on our podcast.... we continue our spotlight with Vassallo bookings by featuring on of the world's best DJ's... please welcome Boris Werner ... Boris Werner is one of the most talented and wanted DJ's in Amsterdam scene. Famous for his enthusiasm behind the decks, his style is what we call organic funky soul music. Phat on the groove, thick on the basslines and yet subtile on the melodics. When Boris started producing his own sounds four years ago, it became clear that this was one of his talents. Boris released his first track Matchmaker / Legeres in 2007, together with his friend and musical partner in crime Lauhaus. After its massive success, they released a second track called Revenge Of The Nerds (2008). These two successful releases drew a great deal of attention to Boris as a producer, and soon he was asked to make a remix of Keep On/Matthias Tanzmann. The remix was already highly supported by: Onur Özur, Mathias Kaden, 2000 and One, Tobi Neumann, Anja Schneider, Raresh and many more. In the mean time Boris was busy producing his No Day Like Monday (2x12), which was released in august 2008 and immediately sold out. It became very popular with artists like: Raresh, Karotte, Kabale und Liebe, Kiko, Magda, Kiki, Djulz, Dave Ellesmere, Dan Curtin and more. Besides being a DJ he’s also a member of the laptop collaboration “Amsterdam 661 Live. They played on festivals like Welcome to the Future and 5 days Off and the infamous Panoramabar in Berlin. Together with his friend Rick Nijhout, who is a part of the VJ collective S_loop. He made the TV Jingle for Ster & Cultuur. Boris is a skillful producer and an amazing DJ. Born with an instinctive funkiness, he has the ability to move any crowd. With international bookings taking him across the border (München, Berlin, Rome, Sofia, London, Barcelona and many more) the future is looking bright. We roll on this month with the Vasallo booking agency with the wonderful Julietta. we are NOICE! and we hope you are having a nice summer...
She always was an activist in Munich nightlife and over the years she already gained an excellent reputation far beyond the German borders – at renowned venues like for instance Panoramabar (Berlin), Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), Rex (Paris), Colors Studio (Tokyo), Zukunft (Zurich), Flex (Vienna), Club 11 (Amsterdam), KamaKama (Italy), Cocoon (Frankfurt) as well as festivals like Love Parade or Sonnemondsterne. In the meantime, after almost 100 gigs worldwide in the year 2007, she counts besides the famous Harry Klein an increasing number of resident clubs in Europe. Her style varies somewhere between House and Techno with all its facets and stands out with a mind-blowing mixture of rare old and modern tracks. she has a specific intuition for the right record on the dancefloor, where she manages to build a set that hooks the listener until the last record. August 13, 2009 03:58 AM PDT
this guy has the makings of a superstar. most of the world agrees. Hailing from the Great State of Washington. Please welcome Dave Pezzner. Freerange Records, Om Records Up until 2008 Dave Pezzner was virtually unknown to the electronic dance music community, aside from his works in the duo “Jacob London” (Classic Music, Doubledown, U-Freqs). For 16 years he cut his chops with partner Bob Hansen, creating eccentric house and break beat rhythms often crossing the lines between bad-ass, funky and hilarious. In the winter of 2008, Pezzner took to his own studio to begin work on his first solo output composing songs that are more serious, with an abstract artistic sensibility. Quickly Dave’s catalog began to materialize with a signature sound: Lofty percussive themes with intentions to create hypnotic soundscapes for the body as well as the brain. It wasn’t long before Pezzner found his first 5 songs scooped up by London-based Freerange Records, covering the first two EP’s of his career, “Other Lover” and the epic three-part masterpiece “Almost Here.” These two EPs garnered him massive support from artists as varied as John Digweed, Laurent Garnier, Peter Kruder, Steve Bug and Ben Watt, setting up Pezzner as a producer on the rise. These first two releases laid a solid foundation for his career and follow-ups are now in the pipeline on San Francisco's Om Records imprint, London’s Urbantorque Recordings, plus another EP for Freerange. Dave has also got an arsenal of remixes forthcoming for heavyweights including Josh Wink, Mark Farina, and Mike Monday. Its a dizzying number of releases for an emerging artist, but now that Pezzner’s stepped out on his own, he’s definitely got a lot to say.
